Teen sailor Jessica Watson asleep during crash: report
CHRISTINE KELLETT
October 20, 2009
Teenage skipper Jessica Watson was asleep when her plastic yacht hit a 63,000-tonne sea freighter off North Stradbroke Island last month.
A preliminary report into the collision was released by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau this morning and has revealed Jessica had been catnapping at the time of the crash on September 8.
Investigators found Jessica had not spotted the 225-metre bulk carrier Silver Yang on her radar equipment despite checking four minutes before impact, 15 nautical miles from Point Lookout.
Instead, she had detected another vessel six miles away and deemed it was not a collision risk before setting her alarm and going to bed.
At 1.50am, the bow of Jessica’s 10-metre sloop Ella’s Pink Lady collided with the ship’s starboard side, tearing off the yacht’s mast and scraping its side.
The 16-year-old, who had been on the first night of a week-long test run to Sydney ahead of her world record attempt to sail solo around the globe, woke up and tried twice to contact the Silver Yang on her radio.
On the second attempt, she told the Chinese-speaking crewman she did not need help.
The report found the Silver Yang had tried to avoid Jessica and had stopped the ship’s engines as soon as crew realised there had been a crash.
The ship continued on its journey after Jessica told them she was OK, the report found.
“The collision was almost square on,” it stated
“The collision woke Ella’s Pink Lady’s skipper. She climbed out of the cabin, grabbed the tiller and tried to steer the yacht. She looked upwards and thought that it was likely that the yacht’s rigging would become entangled with the ship and dismast her vessel, so she returned to the cabin.
“A few seconds later the mast came crashing down.”
Jessica set off on her round-the-world odyssey on Sunday following repairs to her 25-year-old, glass reinforced plastic yacht.
In releasing the report, the safety investigators declined to comment on whether it was wise for her to proceed with the eight-month journey, saying it was up to Jessica and her support crew to decide.
But before she departed from Sydney, the safety bureau took the teen sailor to visit the bridge watch-keeper’s position on a tanker ship in order to help her understand what could be seen from that vantage point.
They also suggested she visit fatigue-management experts in an effort to help her better manage her sleep patterns on the solo journey.
Lead investigator Peter Foley said Jessica had used high-quality equipment, but improvements had been made ahead of her journey around the world.
“She’s got a very well-equipped vessel, and the radar system, no, we’re not concerned about the adequacy,” he told reporters in Canberra this morning.
“Our investigators had a long discussion with Jessica and her support team about the equipment and the fact that all of these items of equipment are aids to navigation, they don’t obviate the need to keep a lookout and actually do what you would normally do, which is to maintain and appropriate lookout.”
The report found Jessica had been sailing at seven knots and the Silver Yang at nine knots and weather conditions had been good.
“The skipper was interviewed and she provided her account of the incident,” the report stated.
“Photographs of the vessel were taken and copies of relevant documents, including log books, charts and manuals, were obtained.”
Jessica had been sleeping at two-hourly intervals, using three separate alarm clocks to wake her up when it was time to check her equipment and position.
The Silver Yang had set out from Newcastle in NSW on September 7 and was carrying coal to China.
The ATSB has not apportioned blame for the collision and will continue its investigation.
The Silver Yang is yet to provide log book and other data.

A TEENAGE girl attempting to sail solo around the world has had to turn back less than 24 hours into the voyage after running into a bulk carrier.
Jessica Watson, 16, set sail on Ella’s Pink Lady from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast yesterday morning after more than a year of preparation.
The Sunshine Coast schoolgirl was attempting become the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world.
A spokesman for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said her yacht collided with a bulk carrier shortly before 2.30am, about 15 nautical miles due east of Point Lookout, on North Stradbroke Island.
“The bulk carrier is believed to be heading north up the east coast and has allegedly failed to stop,” said the spokesman.
“She has contacted her parents who in turn called AMSA. She advised that her boat had suffered quite a bit of damage to the vessel and the mast but she herself is OK.”
Jessica has now start

Open Question: Please help me improve this story for language arts.?
*yes i know the story is messed up and stupid*

Jimmy, the one Armed, one Legged Lumberjack
Jimmy was a lumberjack in Minnesota. Jimmy was one of the best lumberjacks there were, until one day there was a shortage in soldiers for WWII and Jimmy was drafted. In the war, Jimmy lost 3 friends, an arm, and both of the lower halves of his legs when a group of terrorists shot his Humvee with an RPG. Because of his injuries, Jimmy got to go home. None of Jimmy’s friends returned and he was thankful for his life, but he was having a hard time getting enough foot to stay alive. Jimmy was denied job after job because of his injuries and finally gave up. He went into the woods and after lots of hard work, built a small log cabin. One day, a little by saw him hunting for food and took a picture of Jimmy. He showed his parents and they thought he was a dorf because of his ragged cloths, unshaven face, and height. Soon, Jimmy’s spot in the woods was full of news reporters. Disappointed to find he was just a homeless man they left, but one man remained standing and staring. “Amazing!” said the man. “How stupid are you? I’m not a dorf! They don’t even exist!” yelled Jimmy. “I know, I’m just amazed that a guy with your disabilities could chop down these trees and build a cabin! Most people like you can’t even walk anymore.” said the man. “Well I was a lumberjack before I was drafted into the war” “Would you like to help cut some trees for me in Wisconsin?”. Jimmy was so happy to hear those words, he didn’t even ask how much he was paid or how many hours he had to do. When Jimmy arrived at his new work, he saw a wall of trees with tree stumps before them. All along the edge of the trees were big huge men with axes hacking away at the trees. Jimmy picked up a hatchet and breathed in the familiar scent of sawdust and pine trees. Jimmy cut into the tree he was instructed to as fast as he could trying not to look too bad compared to everyone else. Everyone else had finished chopping 10 trees when Jimmy wasn’t even done with his first. When Jimmy finally finished, he walked into the shack to get some food. As Jimmy was walking over to get in line, he heard laughing and comments about him. Jimmy felt very bad for the rest of the day. The next mourning, Jimmy grabbed his hatchet and started cutting a new tree except he tried a lot harder and was almost finished two hours early. When the tree fell over, it fell in Jimmy’s direction and he jumped out of the way just in time and saw the tree lying where the rest of his legs would be if he still had them. Jimmy was exhausted, had a near death experience, and still had to go through the laughing from all the other lumberjacks. On the third day, Jimmy’s boss called everyone over and announced that new trees have been found and are very valuable, he told everyone to get on the truck and cut those trees instead. As Jimmy was jumping on the truck, a lumberjack stopped him “Woah, sorry buddy but these trees are very thick, why don’t you go cut a few saplings while were gone? *Laughs*. Jimmy wanted to try to be as strong as everyone else so went on a different truck. Once the truck arrived, Jimmy looked at the trees. They were very thick but curved in about 5 feet near the bottom. The lumberjacks were to big to crouch down and cut there so they just cut into the thick part. Jimmy was the perfect height to comfortably cut the thin base of the trees and started cutting. When Jimmy finished cutting his first tree, he went back to the shack to get his meal. Expecting to be harassed because of his slowness he walked in as fast as he could to the line, but something was different. There was no line. Jimmy looked around and saw the whole shack was empty. Jimmy thought he really screwed up and was way slower than everyone else and decided to go back out to cut some more trees to make up for his speed. As he was walking back, he saw everyone else still cutting. Jimmy walked over to one of the men and noticed that he was still on his first tree. The man was sweating heavily and still cutting the thick part. “Taking a break Jimmy? I told you to stick to saplings.” yells the man. “Actually I am finished” said Jimmy. “Yeah right, I’m exhausted and only half way through. You can’t even be through the bark yet.” Jimmy just laughed and got his meal. The next day, Jimmy decided to cut three trees instead of one. Jimmy’s boss was very impressed and doubled his pay. Finally Jimmy had found a job and everything was close to before the war. Jimmy thought to himself every night “Who wold have thought that a man with two halves of a leg and one arm would make lots of money doing manual labor.”

Open Question: Looking for an Older Childrens Game?
I’m looking for a computer game i used to play when i was younger, yet cannot for the life of me remeber what it was called. It was a math game in which you traveled all over solving different problems. One place you had to math the polygons up to form shapes and symmetry. One place you had to cut the pizza’s in teh correct fractions for the cats. Another you cut logs for the lumberjacks to build the log cabin…another you had to bundle sugarcane properly. I can’t remember the other levels at the moment, but i would greatly appreciate any help on this topic.
